If you can't
figure out
the purpose, they probably
call it art...
Bas van der heide

“Standing two
metres tall,
he sees and
experiences
everything from a
greater distance
than most.
Perhaps that
explains why the
works that Bas
van der Heide
(1953) exhibits
impact you from
afar."
Carl Weenink
His works alienate. But it’s best not to use that word. Too often, alienation is a euphemism for the artist’s inability to paint a straight line, focus a lens, sharpen a pencil, or come up with an idea.As a youngster, Bas van der Heide spent hours gawking at his ‘famous neighbour’ Har Sanders at work.Half a century later, art historian and curator Peke Hofman describes his work as ‘a textbook example of impressionism’.The works on display during ‘Intriguing from afar...’ (from close up too, by the way) continue the tradition of the impressionists. They are less provocative than during the inception of impressionism in the 19th century but do demonstrate an entirely new conception of stylistic technique.”
